What's your job about?
We do the maths behind different gaming machines. We make sure the numbers balance by doing work on excel, and then running a simulation to make sure the return is what we expect.
We can also work on producing an existing game to a different market by making sure the game rules comply with the regional regulations.
What's your background?
I grew up in Sydney, more specifically the Ryde area. I have always enjoyed playing and watching sports, in particular cricket and soccer. Throughout high school and university, I always had an interest in numbers, which helped me decide which degree to choose at university.
I have had work experience working at a local golf club for 3 years, where I got exposed to working with poker machines for the first time. I also had a 9-month internship working on Data Analytics at the NSW Data Analytic Centre.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
I think once you learn the specific skills on the job, if you have an interest in numbers and can think creatively, anyone would be able to be a game designer.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
There aren’t many places you can work that you can use maths skills in a creative way, which I find pretty cool. You are also encouraged to play our games on the computer or in the ‘play lab’ for a quick break from work.
What are the limitations of your job?
My role doesn’t feature rotations, so I haven’t been exposed to too many aspects of how the company runs. I know this is something they’ll be looking at changing for the 2019 Graduate Program.
