Culture at Baker McKenzie

9.0
9.0 rating for Culture, based on 42 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
Great culture for the most part. Social activities to engage in, if that is your thing. Generally the office is quite social and allows for lots of coffees/catch-ups.

Friendly, kind, fun and engaged! It is everything I could want from a cultural perspective. No intense legal personalities. People have interests and lives outside of work.
Graduate, Melbourne - 10 Sep 2024
The team is incredibly friendly and supportive. Team members are very approachable and it's easy to raise any questions you have. Beyond this, everyone is also really understanding about the transition to being a graduate and people take active steps to check in and see how you're going.

One of the best things about Baker McKenzie is the culture. Everyone is enthusiastic and friendly, and keen to get to know each other. We host a range of fun and interesting social events and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in organising and running events for one of our ID&E or social committees from the start of your journey at the Firm. Most teams have good access to senior lawyers and partners who mentor and support juniors.

The firm has a very friendly and supportive culture where everyone is approachable regardless of their position and level of experience. Junior lawyers often work directly with partners and other senior lawyers and assume high levels of responsibility over matters. There are frequent opportunities to socialise with colleagues informally and at a variety of organised social events.
Junior Associate, Melbourne - 03 Sep 2024
During the office hours, there is a friendly culture with an emphasis on mentoring. People genuinely care about professional development and are always happy to assist with any queries. The hierarchy is quite flat, and you work in smaller teams per deal/transaction. For juniors, it means lots of hands-on experience and great mentoring opportunities. Out of hours, this culture of friendliness continues.

In the office, the culture is fantastic - a very happy, chatty and positive atmosphere while also being hard-working. After hours is often more quiet as many continue working at home. Structure and hierarchy is very flat. I am often, if not always, working directly with a partner on work - receiving instructions and feedback, which is something very beneficial to have.

The team that I am currently in works cooperatively and the hierarchy is certainly not felt in the day to day, as everyone works very collaboratively on a range of tasks.

Bakers has a great team culture. The firm as a whole is very social and down to earth and there are a lot of efforts to be social, including team-specific events and drinks, weekly Friday office drinks and themed drinks (e.g. Mario Kart night and Salsa dancing).

I really enjoy the company's culture, in the office and after hours. I have a really great graduate cohort too. We organise many social events outside of work and often have lunch and after works drinks with each other. I also socialise a lot with many other lawyers in the firm who I have gotten to know through matters we have worked on together and through my involvement in firm committees!

Bakers has quite a flat structure with its hierarchy when it comes to providing work. Being a graduate never stopped me from receiving work directly from partners and it definitely builds a culture of learning by osmosis and direct formal/informal feedback. There are lots of social activities during and after hours that are open to all levels of the firm, and also friends and family i.e. a lawn bowls event, admission ceremony day, etc.

In office is very inclusive: spaces are collaborative and conducive to working together, and social hubs are frequented often by all levels of legal and non-legal staff which encourages mingling. The smaller size of the firm also means you generally have a good idea and knowledge of people outside your immediate practice group. After hours, I have never stayed back to work late without a senior associate or partner equally staying back with me and us working together to get the job done - a very one for all and all for one mentality. Hierarchy only exists in terms of legal knowledge, but you definitely feel valued as a junior and the contribution you can make. Social events are well attended and although we work hard, we also know when it's time to relax and enjoy ourselves.

The firm is managed by partners. The partners usually have a few senior lawyers who also work for them (special counsel and senior associates) and then some general/junior associates. My team is very collaborative and often lawyers will work for multiple partners.
Junior Associate, Sydney - 03 Sep 2024
There is a great firm culture which encourages a lot of social events and gatherings, for example firm parties and Friday night drinks which enable you to meet people outside of your team in a relaxed environment. Day to day, your experience is far more related to the culture of the team you are working in rather than the wider firm.
Graduate, Sydney - 03 Sep 2024
The firm's culture is very inclusive and supportive, and I've always felt welcomed and valued.
Graduate, Melbourne - 03 Sep 2024
The company culture is very open, friendly and social. After hours, it is common to have at minimum one (social) 'event' per week, whether it's a casual catch-up after work, or something more formal. From a hierarchy perspective, this may be team dependent. In my experience, hierarchy has never been a barrier to engage with, both socially and professionally, anyone within the firm.
Graduate, Sydney - 03 Sep 2024
The firm has a relatively flat hierarchy compared to other law firms. Everyone is approachable and accessible. Graduates and junior associates often work closely with senior associates and partners, fostering a collaborative environment. There are firm-wide events, team outings, and informal gatherings such as a NGV night and the annual lawn bowls event.
Graduate, Melbourne - 03 Sep 2024
The culture at Bakers is second to none. Not only is my team friendly, approachable and enjoyable to work in, but I have made friends with many people outside my team. There are plenty of opportunities to socialise in Melbourne, with netball teams, Friday night drinks, an End of Year party, an EOFY party and lawn bowls night.
Junior Associate, Melbourne - 03 Sep 2024
There are some social opportunities after work, including Friday drinks and celebrations for EOFY and End of Year. There is a relatively flat structure at Bakers, so graduates and junior lawyers have many opportunities to work directly with partners and senior associates.
