Management at Clayton Utz

7.5
7.5 rating for Management, based on 37 reviews
How accessible are managers and do they make good mentors? You may want to address internal communication, performance feedback or praise and recognition.
The partners and SA have been crucial in my development and have looked after my well-being. We stay in regular contact and I am provided with well structured feedback
Graduate, Canberra - 13 Sep 2024
My direct managers are incredible. They teach as they wanted to be taught and encourage a curiosity that helps those who want to learn become fantastic lawyers.
3 PQE Lawyer, Sydney - 28 Aug 2024
The senior lawyers of the firm are always open to providing feedback and there is always recognition for great performance.
Graduate, Sydney - 28 Aug 2024
This depends on the team, however, as mentioned in some of my previous answers, given how busy partners are, it is often difficult to get feedback and speak to them. It would be good if partners had a greater involvement in the professional development of graduates
Graduate, Sydney - 28 Aug 2024
P&D communication isn't great and the grad rotations are only told the week before so you don't have time to dispute or challenge placements. People also often get rotations of a low preference.

Seniors take mentoring seriously and make themselves available as necessary to perform that role.
Lawyer, Melbourne - 15 Jul 2024
My managers make great mentors, great with feedback, recognition. Can't flaw. But I have had managers in the past at this organisation who were not nearly as good with these points.
Graduate, Sydney - 12 Jul 2024
People are very busy but in general I am satisfied with senior managements approach ability, willingness to hear from juniors and provide feedback.
Graduate, Sydney - 10 Nov 2023
Some managers lack recognition and praise, which i think is important. Sometimes they are not accessible and it is difficult to receive feedback.
Graduate, Melbourne - 10 Nov 2023
Not amazing. Not enough formal performance interviews in place. Not enough checking in on emotional and mental health
Graduate, Sydney - 27 Oct 2023
All mentors and coaches I have the experience to work with have been great and very helpful.
Graduate, Brisbane - 20 Oct 2023
Fairly accessible. The managers are not typically in the mentor role, though they do sometimes put in time to provide good feedback and recognition. More often this will come from the next level down.
Graduate, Perth - 18 Oct 2023
All the senior leadership/mentorship that I have received has been excellent: hands on and invested.

It depends on the team you are in

I have a supervising partner and a coach and they have been very accessible. I have had the opportunity to work with them one-on-one and also as part of the broader team with different matters and they have communicated well, and I have also organised initial, mid-rotation and end of rotation catch-ups with them to receive feedback and recognition.

Very difficult to answer because on the graduate program we have many different managers and mentors. I have had some people who are good managers and good mentors, and some who are not. Overall though, the experience is more positive than negative.
Graduate, Brisbane - 17 Oct 2023
I have found that most are accessible. Some make good mentors (it is on you to reach out to make a mentor). Sometimes it can be hard to extract feedback.
Graduate, Melbourne - 17 Oct 2023
Overall everyone seems invested in junior development, some make more time for this than others - don't really have the feeling of someone specifically taking me under their wing but overall there are plenty of places to seek out support and mentorship. I have been very satisfied with my mentor relationship but don't think this is universal.
Graduate, Melbourne - 17 Oct 2023
Depends on team. Some partners are more accessible and approachable than others. However, they are often time poor which makes it harder to communicate and learn from them. Some partners are better at providing feedback than others.
