Management at CSIRO

8.1
8.1 rating for Management, based on 58 reviews
How accessible are managers and do they make good mentors? You may want to address internal communication, performance feedback or praise and recognition.
From a graduate perspective, direct Line Managers are reasonably accessible at CSIRO and helpful. Anyone higher up than that most are quite busy and don't have the time for graduates. As for mentors from my experience, it is hit and miss, some make good mentors and some don't, that is just the nature of people being different. They have lots of knowledge and experience which is great to draw upon and are willing to point you in the right direction. Feedback, praise and recognition is well balanced when it is given.

I am very happy with my immediate managers. My manager's managers, when I can get their attention, are also helpful and efficient. They are however very busy, and many key decisions vital to my career and job have to pass through their hands

Most of my experience has been with the Indigenous management staff who have been very enjoyable to work with and who have shown many great mentoring skills. There is a lot of regular internal communication with them and they place great emphasis on inclusion and recognition. Of the Energy management staff, they have been a pleasure to work with also.

Fairly accessible by email, not available in person. Does not suit my requirements.

while I get along with my managers and respect there work, they are very very busy. I would have given a 9 but am a jaded due to the aforementioned points.

Throughout my program I've had 'buddies' that guide me through each rotation as both a point of contact and work supervisor/Mentor. I'm happy to say that each manager has greatly helped improve my skills and understanding, and have all approached communication openly, whilst providing constructive feedback where necessary.

Managers are not always accessible. My first manager (while absolutely lovely) did not come into the office to meet me once, despite being her home site being readily accessible to me and me expressing that I like to work face-to-face with people numerous times. Weekly one-on-ones were sometimes postponed but usually rescheduled. My first manager was good at providing positive feedback but often had to be repeatedly reminded to action things arising from our discussions.

My manager is supportive and available. Internal communication is on Teams Performance feedback & recognition could be more specific.

line managers and Finance Leadership Team are stellar, could not ask for more caring and competent management team

My direct managers have always been lovely to me. I have been unimpressed with the treatment of some of my team members. This has impacted their mental health. My mentor is welcoming, willing to share information and knowledge and approachable. My manager does give good feedback and praises my work.

My manager at CSIRO has been extremely supportive, caring and knowledgeable. We have fortnightly catch ups which were originally weekly but as I got more familiar with my role they became fortnightly. I feel comfortable going up to her with performance feedback and she also gives recognition when necessary.

My manager is very accessible, this is helped by the fact that he works at the same location as I do. But both my line manager and the leaders of the other sub team I work with are always happy to have a chat and are very responsive to teams messages and will definitely make time for me. I have a mentor who is separate from my manager who also available and has provided great advice, having said that I am sure I could go to my current manager in a mentoring capacity when I am in a new rotation under a new leader. My manger is a great people manager and is very transparent with communication and expectations. He provides really encouraging feedback and praise and always frames things in terms of what we can do next time to make things even better rather than taking a negative approach. He also keeps you involved in the conversation; communication is very much 2 way.

I have excellent managers. They have very high emotional intelligence and empathy, and are also highly skilled and knowledgeable workers.
Graduate, Sydney - 09 Jul 2024
As with all places I have worked, the more senior, the busier the person. However, given that, my managers have all made time for me to talk to them and ask them important, and silly questions. I also have 5 mentors, due to my position and mentor programs offered at CSIRO. I am not short on willing and helpful mentors.

yes great managers and support
Graduate, Brisbane - 08 Jul 2024
See previous regarding praise and recognition with systems testing activity. Managers are accessible and easy to talk to. The time of year means a lot of people are taking leave, but we always have someone to talk to if we need help.
Intern, Brisbane - 08 Jan 2022
The team manager is always ready to help and is very polite. Not much performance feedback or mentorship from management.
Intern, Canberra - 23 Dec 2021
There could be more performance feedback and checking in.
Intern, Melbourne - 20 Dec 2021
