Career Prospects at Deloitte Australia

Big 4 organisations do offer faster progression than industry roles, so there is plenty of opportunity to move up. However, the sign posts and criteria to hit to be promoted is a bit vague and quite subjective. It is more about forming a good relationship with your project manager to ensure you get higher scores, network heavily to ensure you are constantly resourced to make sure your utilisation is high enough (or higher than your peers), and making sure you have a good relationship with your direct supervisor so that they endorse your promotion. If you have poor relationships or are perceived poorly by others, you will not get promoted.

Not too sure about future promotion opportunities but as a grad, we are in this role for a little over a year until we get promoted to the next level, which I think is adequate time to learn relevant skills and get more experience.

There's a few metrics based on how often you're on a project, then feedback from your coach and anyone you work with, among other things. There are general tracks everyone takes, and specialised ones as well. No one is the same, and you can move throughout the company at your pace, it's all a matter of the work that is put in.

The graduate programme typically lasts 18 months, and if your utilisation is satisfactory, you will be promoted to consultant. Promotion is focused on how you have added value to the company, contributed to its growth, and performed on projects.

Since I am a Graduate, I am not too knowledgeable on the promotion process, but I know it is very structured and that the company guides us to always improve and work towards the next step/position in our career.

Beyond the 18 month progression from Grad > Consultant, I'm nervous about my prospects of getting promoted beyond that. The promotions feel very much so dependent on market conditions comparative to actual performance.

Deloitte, along with most other professional services companies, have a very linear path forward. Deliver consistent outcomes, communicate well, and excel expectations should ensure a smooth progression upward.

Possibility - key word. Potential for growth is big but not always justified with the amount of skill or value you bring to the company. Other working parts that play into this.

It is unclear and often when you express your aspiration for a promotion, it is often hard to gauge whether my coach rallies behind me.
