Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
I am excited to see what my future holds here
Graduate, Canberra - 24 Sep 2024
Career prospects within the department are very good. We begin the program as an aps3, at the beginning of our third rotation we progress to an aps4 and when we finish the program we become aps5s. It is also not uncommon for former grads to become aps6s within 12-18 months. There is a lot of scope to progress your career within the department and new opportunities to try our different skills.

I know from discussion with experienced managers I have the potential to find promotion relatively quickly. I believe this takes a good work ethic, an ability to complete tasks quickly and to a high standard as well as the ability to form strong relationships with workmates and managers and maintain them.

There is promotion built into the program which is really good. Otherwise, there is a lot of flexibility and a clear way to be promoted and move up the ranks. They encourage movement within the department and in the aps more widely.
Graduate, Canberra - 03 Sep 2024
After finishing the graduate program we get promoted to aps 5. From then on it is about finding internal opportunities as they arise
Graduate, Canberra - 02 Sep 2024
- graduates move to aps4 during the year which is nice to be recognised, and then an aps5 at the conclusion of the graduate program
Graduate, Canberra - 02 Sep 2024
Graduate completes two rotations at aps3, advances to aps4 and completes a third rotation and then advances to aps5 and into an ongoing position (one of the previous three rotations or a new position entirely, depending on availability/funding) all in under one year
Graduate, Canberra - 30 Aug 2024
I am very satisfied with career progression. Being a part of aps means there is a lot of opportunities in regards to career progression as well as the privilege to work across different departments.

Next level up is aps6 - you can do expressions of interest to get acting positions it takes a lot of motivation and willpower, but it's better than negotiating your pay at a private firm
Graduate, Canberra - 25 Feb 2021
Natural progression through the grad program, after that work and seek promotions as opportunities arise.
Midlevel, Canberra - 23 Feb 2021
If you're good at your job and open to opportunities, you can progress quite quickly. From a grad, most people are in a senior advisory role within 12 months. From there it's only one step into executive positions.
Midlevel, Canberra - 22 Feb 2021
Showing initiative and working to the aps standards was quite easy for aps 3, 4 and now 5.
Midlevel, Canberra - 22 Feb 2021
Short-term: promotion is accessible and easy to reach if you work hard long-term: advancement to director/manager level can be difficult - some areas won't provide advancement opportunities to anybody who hasn't worked in the aps 10+ years
Graduate, Canberra - 22 Feb 2021
I only just finished my graduate program in december, so I am still in the process of working out my career progression. However, I think that opportunities pop up to progress one's career, and it seems possible from the people around me.
