Career Prospects at Energy Queensland

8.6
8.6 rating for Career Prospects, based on 35 reviews
Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
Career progression is generally slow, since people generally don't leave the company so new roles don't open up much.
Graduate, Brisbane - 13 Sep 2024
I can see the opportunity to grow and progress my career in departments that interest me.
Graduate, Brisbane - 12 Sep 2024
The expectation is to grow and move up the ranks (with respect to your field of expertise) - this is supported by continuous learning and training.

After 2-3 years of grad program, you can apply for an engineer role. Lots of opportunities in renewables at the moment and leadership.
Graduate, Brisbane - 20 Aug 2024
Progression is well defined in the graduate program and the pay progressions are very generous when compare with other companies for similar roles. Performance objectives are defined at the beginning of each graduate rotation. At the end of each rotation, performance evaluation is conducted, if all objectives were met then there is a pay progression, otherwise an investigation of why objectives were not met occurs and support is offered.

I can specifically speak on promotion opportunities within the business as I have not been in a position where this is a possibility. However, each team is very flexible and changes in team structure are completed all the time. In an ever-changing industry new roles are always required to be able to complete new tasks that have not been encountered before.
Graduate, Brisbane - 13 Aug 2024
Engineering role at the end of program. Former graduates have risen to GM of engineering departments within 10-15 years.
Graduate, Toowoomba - 13 Aug 2024
The reach within the company is vast and widespread. The professional progression in the company is available as your knowledge and experience progresses.
Graduate, Brisbane - 13 Aug 2024
As graduates, we move through the company every 6 months, and correspondingly, get raises as well at the start of each rotation.
Graduate, Brisbane - 12 Aug 2024
I didn't have any difficulties finding a permanent role post completion of the graduate program.
Graduate, Brisbane - 09 Aug 2024
Once finishing on the graduate program there is great opportunity to take on a permanent position in a wide range of roles. This however does depend on positions being advertised and becoming available. Moving up the ranks is much the same and dependant on available positions, experience and qualifications such as RPEQ. Much the same as any company.
Graduate, Rockhampton - 09 Aug 2024
There are a fair amount of career progression opportunities , however in my experience there can be some decisions made about some internal applications behind closed doors that are not fair or even consistent with different people in similar positions.
Graduate, Brisbane - 09 Nov 2023
Career progression at EQL is outlined in the union agreement and therefore objective and easy to quantify.
Graduate, Cairns - 06 Nov 2023
There are a lot more graduates being employed which will make it more competitive to find a preferred full-time position.
Graduate, Brisbane - 06 Nov 2023
Being at EQL less than 12 months and in a 3 year set program, I am yet to really see what promotion and career progression may look like here. In terms of the graduate program, the salary progression is very positive.
Graduate, Brisbane - 26 Oct 2023
Fixed, though generous pay progression, but limited ability to jump off the program earlier than 2.5 years in. Or if you do jump off early your pay may be stifled needlessly. Plenty of open job opportunities for once your program is coming to an end.
Graduate, Rockhampton - 25 Oct 2023
Natural progression in a role/team does not occur. Only when someone above moves on. If you are willing to switch teams, progression can be fast-tracked.
Graduate, Brisbane - 25 Oct 2023
Career progression is clear. You start as a graduate engineer (PM1). After the grad program, you apply for PM2 roles (e.g. engineer roles). After that, you can stay a PM2 or push to do things to get promoted. Senior engineer - > principal engineer -> manager -> general manager and so on. Crucially, ALL positions are advertised internally first which gives you a great advantage over external applicants (because well... they can't apply). The industry as a whole is booming as well so there are plenty of vacant jobs to help you build your skills and experience and climb the ladder within EQL. I see very little reason to change companies if you get a job at EQL.
Graduate, Brisbane - 19 Oct 2023
In my current position as a graduate engineer, there is progression based on successful completion of rotations. Nearing the completion of the program I am confident that graduates would have the skills and knowledge to apply for engineering roles nearing the completion of the program.
Graduate, Brisbane - 17 Oct 2023
6 rotations in the grad program, each one includes a pay progression (if you meet minimum requirements). Guaranteed job at the end of the program, although you do have to go through a normal recruitment process when applying for these roles. If unsuccessful, you just keep applying for other desired roles. It is expected that within the next few years there will be many lower level jobs (for those rotating off the graduate program). Once in a permanent position, there is opportunity to continue progressing & also doing secondments.
