Culture at NSW Government

8.3
8.3 rating for Culture, based on 44 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
The culture is great in the office. Aside from referring to the higher up managers by formalities (ma'am/sir), everyone feels on the same level, despite being in different ranks/roles. There is a lot of teamwork in the office, especially when tricky questions or situations come up, everyone works together to come up with a solution. Everyone is also approachable, making me feel comfortable to ask anybody in my office a question, even when my direct supervisor and work colleague were away. Socialising is also great, the higher ups always organised lunches/morning teas on special event days e.g. easter, harmony day and also colleagues always organised a morning tea/lunches on peoples birthdays or as a farewell.

It is a very inclusive culture. I report to my manager who then reports to the director. It is a very supportive environment with friendly colleagues.

Not a great work environment in terms of people and management

Not much after hours but I don't really mind that. The in-office team is lovely. The main attraction isn't how good they are, but how there has been effectively no drama or issues in my whole time here.

The team is excellent, but the structure and approval process, and the internal policies are not friendly.

My team is incredibly supportive and quite collaborative in nature.

I think the genuine flexibility, desire to see people grow & move around within the NSW gov is really good. The office culture is a bit dire, as I am often the only person there in our team.

People are extremely friendly and helpful. Teamwork plays a key role in all projects and managers and colleagues are all great help allowing the work to be satisfying as well as being a great learning experience.

My team is incredibly supportive and cooperative, someone is always willing to lend a hand as a sounding board for ideas and problems. The hierarchy is fairly flat and within my area is not particularly rigidly enforced. The directors and executive director are always willing to have a quick word if they've got the time. You can socialise as much or as little as you please, my team has informal social evenings every 3-6 months.

People are very close to each other regardless of hierarchy. They are willing to help and cooperate for the sake of work.

Relaxed and rather informal within the team, especially outside of work related matters. Much of the NSW public service operates under a flexible working arrangement, with most areas and teams offering work from home and flexible working hours. Communication between team members and management is fluid, though there is a definite hierarchy to follow depending on the nature of your request. The team I work in exercises excellent communication and interoperability, with all members working collaboratively with one another on projects and assisting where they can. On a personal level, all of members of the team are highly approachable and supportive both personally and professionally.

Lots of collaboration among teams, but not much socializing

Great culture in office. Very respectful and kind. Good teamwork and collaboration. Structured and hierarchical, but executives happy to talk to grads directly. Allowed to work in the office or from home. Have regular team meetings and social events. Most events are in office hours, but after hours drinks every so often.

There is a hierarchy but the people towards the top seem to be pretty relaxed and treat everyone nicely. In my experience company culture has only been during office hours, I think most employees have children at home so there are no (at least that I know of) social activities. I have however been to social activities with other graduates outside of work hours which was nice.

In office culture is great, however not a massive out of office social life. Management and Culture is positive and not overbearing, very helpful when needed.

Very friendly atmosphere in the workplace. I do not live close to work and have not taken advantage of socialising activities. They are available and I have been invited. Management seems to listen to staff and I know I can ask any team members for help.

The team has a really good work and social culture but there is a disconnect between the team and the Director.

Culture in my agency is fantastic. Very good hours for a work-life balance, and an appreciation that you have to be flexible around people's other commitments outside work. Juniors and seniors work together regularly to produce projects, and hierarchy so far has never been imposed as a way to force you to remain in the office. Although the work itself can be isolating, the team are so lovely that everyone goes out of their way to host social events every now and again so that you feel engaged.
