Culture at Optus

8.4
8.4 rating for Culture, based on 60 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
In the office, most people are happy to help when I have a problem so overall the work culture is good. There is a trend people are getting busier and busier so I have to work after hours sometimes. Thanks to the grad program -- after hours the grads can have some activities outside company, and share our experience in different roles, and support each other. This is a valuable experience working as a new grad as I do not feel alone and do not need to keep everything to myself.

I'm not sure about my company's culture after hours as I usually work within 9am-5pm. Certain parts of Optus are more hierarchical than others but overall I don't think Optus is very hierarchical. Some teams are more cooperative than others. Sometimes tensions might appear between certain teams, because they belong to different business units/departments and each of these business units has different KPIs, which I think is very common in large corporate in general and these kind of problems are probably less evident in startups. The harmony between teams will be better if there is an alignment on KPIs on the leadership level.

Flexible and great culture but it depends on your team

weekly activities, fundraising and educational talks. Diversity networks and a variety of social events

Strong Culture, very inclusive. Interacting on a non work basis is fairly limited. It would be nice to see more recognition/celebration events

There is not a lot of socialising outside of work, but in the office everyone is friendly, helpful, approachable. There is a strong sense of teamwork, and it is a relatively flat hierarchy.

Everyone is good and fun to work with, love them all.

My team in particular has a good culture, everyone is social and friendly. However I have worked across various teams in the company where that is not the case. It varies wildly from team to team.

In office culture is quite good. Campus is large with lots of places to sit and chat with team members and colleagues. Throughout the week, there are always talks on about various topics that you can attend. Generally collaborative with people moving around to talk to other colleagues frequently. Office is quieter some days as more people work from home. Totally packed on Wednesdays as everyone comes in. I've also enjoyed the work outings throughout the year. The company event orbital was very well planned with free food and drinks all day and lots of talks from interesting people. Outside of working hours there is some interaction with my fellow graduates. We communicate through a group chat and organise a variety of activities through the year.

Limited activities outside of work in my experience, but dependent on team. Structure can be quite top-heavy but lots of opportunity for movement within and across teams / career development

Socialising amongst colleagues is okay, aware some teams aren't that good. Current team has good teamwork and cooperation.

The work is very flexible, 38 hours a week between 7am and 7pm, whichever is easiest for you. I typically do 8:30am to 4:30/5pm. Inter team cooperation is strong, however there can be inter-business unit rivalries. Colleagues are typically friendly with each other and go out occasionally.

Overall Optus have a lot of employee events and there is always something happening in the office. You feel included from day one and there is lots of opportunity to learn more as a general knowledge. I have struggled in my team and actual work feeling included and like I am contributing to something important.

It is very inclusive, I have never felt discriminated against, even when I was working in a male-dominated space as a woman. People collaborate well as a team, and also understand how to take ownership of their own work.

Both in the office and after hours, the culture is great. I feel as though I am very motivated to do well here.

People are great! Support is everywhere! We have a compulsory office day (Wednesday) which everyone comes in and everyone uses it as a day to properly network and catch-up to fellow colleagues. It's also a day where we have an event on every Wednesday whether it is a conference talk on campus or a workshop that we can further develop our skills.

It is very flat in terms of hierarchy in my business unit. Senior leaders are extremely approachable and supportive. Strong culture of collaboration within my business unit.

Company culture is good in the office and after hours, some teams seem to get lunch and drinks after and promote external events such as volunteering and team building. Structure and hierarchy is okay but it can be difficult to work with those in higher positions due to their calendar being booked out consistently with meetings. Seems like additionally those in higher positions are working much longer hours regularly, often I see people online at 8AM and not logging off until after 6:30PM. I've heard some other grads' managers go back online late at night to do extra work due to load requirements which doesn't seem sustainable and healthy long term.
