Training & Personal Development at Queensland Government

Mostly informal looking at previous work / continuing pre-existing projects / looking at documentation. Every so often full-day training is available externally.

A blend of work shadowing, professional training, and self-guided training.

Occasional soft skills training workshops with other graduates every couple of months for a day or two at a time. Other than that, was all on the job training.

There are heaps of internal training opportunities, and my team always takes the time to show me how to do things I've never done before. I'm always encouraged to try new things and it's been great.

I had lots of departmental training that didn't really feel tailored to my role, but I assume is standard for everyone working in the department. The information I did need was provided as well as allowing time for me to pursue online training such as LinkedIn learning for more training on products/languages that I'm working in.

Mostly self-paced training but limited direction as to which courses are available or recommended

ESE and ESM onboarding was good. Both instances I've had proper mentoring and on the job training with constant checkups on progress. I was able to understand that I am progressing properly. The other two teams were underwhelming as I wasn't given meaningful work/training and was just given work to keep me busy. The tasks felt menial with zero purpose and it felt like I wasn't making a change or contributing to the Department's Strategic Goals unlike ESM and ESE.

There are many courses made available to employees throughout the year that are available online and in-person. The graduate program also offered many different in-person training days.

On the job training has been very good, thanks to line manager who has been willing to share knowledge. Some formal training has been provided, it could be more often

I think there is a real lack of training for staff especially as it's a graduate role, I was hoping there would be a bit more guidance and mentoring

There hasn't been much training or development programmes to attend, but I am aware of the many opportunities. It's very easy to find an area of interest within the company and learn about any of the ways to learn.

Mandatory training. Been doing a CCNA course on CBVT nuggets. This course has helped me learn more about what my team does.

HR training was pretty generic, decent basic info. Actual role training was entirely external for ~1 month (December, break about to be there) with crazy amount of resources suggested and no real idea of what was more important or even necessary - one guy recommended an entire textbook for reading.

Look at the wiki and do the training. Do jobs in queue to gain more experience.

Lots of material and easy access to them.

The company provides LinkedIn Learning for free, Learning and development.

Ive gained 3 certifications in cloud while here, all paid for by the company. Ive been on a lot of training courses and am encouraged to train often to keep working on my skills.

So far I have just done compulsory online training and received ad hoc work instructions. Colleagues are very polite and patient as they show me what to do.

Internal online learning system that offers a variety of courses. We also have access to LinkedIn Learning. I was able to undertake additional training that was hosted by other government departments.
