Management at ACT Government

8.5
8.5 rating for Management, based on 43 reviews
How accessible are managers and do they make good mentors? You may want to address internal communication, performance feedback or praise and recognition.
Very accessible, but I understand that is not an experience that all grads have received.

Managers are very accessible and easy to communicate with. They are good mentors and are happy to help me with the start of my career. Performance feedback is mandated through a personal development plan we fill in and reflect on in each rotation (3 months) and they are comfortable with providing constructive criticism on my work. There is a good culture of open praise and recognition everywhere I have worked which is led by managers.

Open door policies - all of them

I have had a mixed range of experiences with different managers. Often as managers are busy concentrating on immediate priorities, is can be difficult to communicate effectively. In general, I am very satisfied with my managers.

I would prefer a manager who is able to balance checking in on me and letting me work independently. Some of the work I have been doing has required me to gain subject knowledge and in the beginning it would be helpful if managers also had subject knowledge so that they can assess my capacity and verify the accuracy of my work (and others). Internal communication needs to be discussed more to explain the processes and procedures. While I have received feedback, I would like my manager to enable me to action the feedback or facilitate actioning that feedback, e.g. discussions on what I can do. I have received praise and recognition.

My supervisors have been phenomenal and I will be inspired by them when I continue my career.

Managers have been excellent overall. My three managers have not been outstanding people managers, and particularly the 2nd and third they haven't had as clear plans and directions for my onboarding, work, and development. I've felt it's been up to me to make sure I'm advocating for what I need in a given situation. However, all been very supportive and are certainly trying their best to do right by me.

Most managers have been absolutely amazing at providing performance feedback, recognition of work and guidance. Everyone has a different managerial style, some of which work for me more than others, which is expected in a large workplace. I find that most managers are great at providing unprompted guidance (i.e. providing good instructions and suggesting work to build my skill set), whereas some managers are more responsive (i.e. I need to ask what skills they think I need to improve and go to them with task questions).

The managers have been very supportive.

Most of the support from my peer, but totally is great support from my team.

Really female-led teams for me this year - absolutely remarkable individuals with a wealth of public and private experience. Really intelligent and good at facilitating teams, and caring for your wellbeing and want to understand / help you reach your goals.

The managers are understanding, helpful, and give a lot of support when needed. They are great mentors and are great at giving guidance with each workplace directorate.

The managers are very accessible and happy for you to set up time to chat with them either informally or formally. They will often provide feedback at certain times (for example when reviewing your personal development plan) unless you ask specifically for feedback. I have found that other colleagues that work below your manager normally take on more of a mentoring role, as they usually have greater capacity to do so.

My supervisor for my first rotation was understanding and patient regarding me having skills and knowledge that was irrelevant for the role I was given. My 2nd rotation supervisor was also understanding, but did not have as much time to sit with me and give me as much guidance on the work involved. My 3rd rotation supervisor was very understanding and was able to guide me quite a fair bit in ONC.

Been lucky and grateful to have had absolutely amazing managers so far.

All managers I've worked with are great! Incredibly supportive, give praise, feedback, recognition, and communicate well.

Managers are accessible most of the time, though sometimes are flat out busy. Yes my managers have been exemplary employees. Communication is generally good, though can be more difficult WFH. They are honest about feedback, and give me my flowers where I do well, and tell me where I can improve, and what I can do to improve

Great, very nice person, very supportive, and like to give me opportunities to practice, inspire me in many ways.

I have been blessed to have wonderful mentors across all my rotations. They were all the kindest and supportive. Easy to approach and were always available when needed. They were also the one who provided me with most constructive feedback. I am very grateful for that.

My managers are very easy to talk to and have great communication skills. They come off as human and people-oriented and not bossy or rude.
