I have been exposed to all roles ranging from underground duties, to production trucking duties, to mine geology duties to some dirlling duties. We often have to cover one role plus another role. I have been mostly stuck doing production trucking duties throughout my time here.

The first 6 months of my role has mainly been focused on the plant operations and learning the ins-and-outs of the processing areas. This has generally proceeded through a shadowing portion and an independent operation portion. I am trusted enough to operate independently. I enjoy the challenge of working independently and this method has developed my knowledge significantly. The issues arise through the miscommunication between departments. As I am technically under the metallurgy department but have been working with the operation crews, occasionally I find myself jumping between roles and jobs due to a lack of communication. Sometimes it feels as though some in the metallurgy department do not have a firm grasp of what happens and what time is required as part of the operations crew. Occasionally, I find myself having to abandon my operations experience in favour for a task allocated by the metallurgy department. This is mostly fine, however, generally the tasks mostly seem like errands and fail to add much to my professional development. Furthermore, as it takes away from my time in operations, it can sometimes take away from my operational development. Additionally, often due to miscommunications between departments, it feels as though some in the operations crews view my work for the metallurgy department as "slacking" or avoiding work in the plant. This may be just perceived and not real, but it has impacted my overall satisfaction.

My role includes providing technical support to the maintenance team - this includes verifying drawings, updating information on drawings, and improving our document system to ensure the plant keeps on running. I am heavily involved in projects that improve the safety and efficiency of our site. For example, I am designing a new platform for the operators on site. The new platform will be safer and more reliable than our current.
Graduate, Perth - 07 Jun 2022
