Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Graduate Stories
Graduate stories
It’s nice to work in a collaborative environment. Issues are discussed freely, and no one is afraid to ask for help regardless of their level of experience.
One of the best things about my job is that the data I help collate and analyse goes on to inform policy and instigate real change for the betterment of communities.
It’s been an invaluable experience to delve into the production side of the information that drives key decisions in our country and to receive positive feedback from stakeholders regarding the high quality of our work.
The methodology stream in the ABS Graduate Program was a natural choice when I graduated; it provided me the opportunity to work on challenging statistical problems across a wide range of areas.
There is a tension between conceptual purity and pragmatic implementation of statistics that must be negotiated and interpreted by the analyst, which I find both challenging and interesting.
I love a lot of things about my job. I especially like being the first person to see the numbers come through for my markets, that’s always really exciting, knowing that you have access to privileged information that no-one else has seen yet.
Working in the Methodology division allows me to thrive and grow as a statistician. There are plenty of learning opportunities in the form of internal courses, workshops and seminars.
