Management at Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)

8.2
8.2 rating for Management, based on 76 reviews
How accessible are managers and do they make good mentors? You may want to address internal communication, performance feedback or praise and recognition.
I've always had very good working and mentoring relationships with my line managers. There's a real culture at the ABS that regardless of the role you're in, it's likely that you'll work in many roles throughout your career. This means that your line management and colleagues expect that you're rotate to other areas or even other agencies, so there's a real emphasis on supporting you to develop the necessary skills and gain experience that will help you throughout your career journey.

Some managers are great, others don't have the skills to be manager and would be better suited to individual work.

Managers and executive are really accessible at the ABS. There are opportunities for formal mentorship and shadowing but they all seem to be more than happy to offer advice and answer your questions in an informal capacity. They are also very good at internal messaging and keeping the company up to date with important notices. As well as formal opportunities for performance management, feedback and recognition, there are also many instances were this is given ad hoc

Everything about them is amazing. They are approachable, accepting, and knowledgeable.
Graduate, Melbourne - 30 Jul 2024
My direct manager is great. He is very easy going and approachable. He is quick to praise and provide public recognition for a job well done. There can be a tendency in the ABS to promote people who are good at doing their work ie. statistical analysis, but are not great with people management and communication and it would be great if more was done to help improve these skills.

I've been very fortunate to have had many great managers in my time at the ABS

No complaints

I think this is really personal. I've run the gamete from great managers who actively mentor you and try to help you develop and grow, to people who basically ignore any responsibility they have to you and only reach out to delegate stuff to you when they don't know how to do something. It feels like luck of the draw to me

Very variable - some are excellent, others terrible (no leadership, accessibility, create poor culture)
4 years at the organisation, was a grad in 2020, Hobart - 23 Jul 2024
Some wonderful managers, some terrible. It's not generalisable.

All of my managers have been great. They work to my style, are available when I need something and provide feedback as asked. There is plenty of recognition for work that's completed, even if you don't feel it was a job well done.

Managers are great mentors, they give regular feedback and encourage you to participate in project they think would build skills you need.

I have only positive things to say about my line management. My direct supervisor has been friendly, accessible, helpful, and committed to my development since I started (as have the other members of our team). Our team leads (EL1s) are also approachable and communicate clearly and frequently, as does the Director of our section (EL2).

My managers are very accessible and supportive. They have been good mentors and I always feel I can communicate any issues with them. Additionally, I get regular feedback on my work performance and know where I can develop.
APS5, Sydney - 22 Jul 2024
My supervisor and director have exceptional people management skills and are very approachable if I need to consult with them about something..
APS5, Geelong - 22 Jul 2024
My supervisors and immediate managers have fantastic communication and the development and performance agreements really help with being aware of where we stand with my work.
Graduate, Melbourne - 22 Jul 2024
My managers have been very accessible and regularly like to check in with me on how I'm going and provide feedback on what I'm doing well or poorly if required. I have had great mentors that regularly look out for development opportunities for me.
Graduate, Adelaide - 22 Jul 2024
Very accessible and friendly for social chats. They do not have the time for mentorship or the authority to reward good performance. this limits their ability to manage well. They are also at the whims of changing work plans and orders from on high
Graduate, Canberra - 22 Jul 2024
Really helpful, provide good feedback and support. Praise is regularly done when individuals achieve milestones.
