Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
Since completing the 2022 Graduate program, I have had many opportunities to progress in my career. A big factor is willingness to step out of the comfort zone and take ownership of work/projects.
Graduate, Adelaide - 21 Aug 2024
There are generally always many job opportunities available on our careers website. To be able to be promoted, we must go through a recruitment process (unless we are offered a higher duties opportunity) where we need to demonstrate the necessary skills and abilities to perform the higher level role.
Started as a graduate in 2022, now working as a Career Development Manager, Melbourne - 21 Aug 2024
As a grad, we will be broadbanded at the end of the program upon successfully meeting the capabilities. Normally when applying for a higher APS level role, you will need to be able to demonstrate that you have met the criteria: a higher skill and capability level. These are clearly explained on the organisation's internal capability page, so we can prepare ourselves before an opportunity arise.
Graduate, Melbourne - 12 Aug 2024
Experience and initiative (I think). I have applied for a position at a higher position as I have past work experience. The graduate program coordinators often invite different business lines to talk to us about the work they do, which itself is educational.
Graduate, Canberra - 30 Jul 2024
After successful completion of Grad Program, promotion to APS 4. Aplenty of jobs are advertised on ATO website regularly. Success depends on your skills and knowledge.
Graduate, Sydney - 29 Jul 2024
There are not enough promotion opportunities. Sometimes you have to wait a year or more for a relevant job ad.
APS4, Brisbane - 26 Jul 2024
The variety of opportunities to grow in this workplace is incredible. You can move around the organisation into different business lines which can feel as though you have started a new job without having to meet a new team, adjusting to new culture etc.
Graduate, Melbourne - 18 Jul 2024
Being a gradute I was hoping to give this a 10/10. The program in my oppion does not care about your career goals and only that of what is "required by the business"
Graduate, Melbourne - 12 Jul 2024
There are opportunities and we are advised to apply for it. Though sometimes the merit pool stuff takes longer time without any feedback.
Graduate, Perth - 11 Jul 2024
ATO is the big organisation. It has rooms for everyone. Be yourself and friendly, it will take yourself further.
Graduate, Brisbane - 11 Jul 2024
There are a lot of opportunity to progress but not necessary the area of interest.
Graduate, Adelaide - 09 Jul 2024
Not know too much about promotion but the Company has a lot of opportunities internally
Graduate, Adelaide - 09 Jul 2024
In under 2 years I was able to go from an APS 3 position to an APS 6 position. Best tips are to always be open to doing work slightly above you pay so you have examples for future promotion interviews.
APS 6, Brisbane - 04 Jul 2024
Upon successfully completing the Graduate program there is an automatic broadbanding of Graduates, going from APS 3 to APS 4. Graduates also have the option to apply to other roles during the program. Following my placement into my desired rotational area, I also have the opportunity to pursue further study outside of the ATO to develop myself and apply to higher duty roles.
Junior staff (APS4), Sydney - 03 Jul 2024
Network with senior team members and your reporting manager in your area. Look for opportunities in newsletters in your outlook email.
Graduate, Sydney - 03 Jul 2024
Already made the merit pool for an APS 6 role. Staff shortages and high demand in data means it is easy to move up the ranks - other disciplines may have different experiences.
Graduate, Melbourne - 08 Nov 2022
There appear to be great opportunities to progress your career within the ATO, with many previous grads now being EL1 - SES level.
Graduate, Sydney - 07 Nov 2022
I am hopeful and believe that there are both promotion and career progression opportunities. To 'move up the ranks', you need to work diligently to produce high quality work (output) and provide evidence of meeting the capabilities and criteria expected of the higher role. There are Merit Pools that you can be placed in for similar roles across agencies in the APS. There are also opportunities to work in 'Higher Duties' roles temporarily to gain experience at the level you want to be substantively promoted to (while earning that higher salary whilst performing that higher duty work).
Graduate, Newcastle - 07 Nov 2022
I feel like my managers have all taken an active interest in my professional development. They are freely giving of their time and advice and have suggested roles I should apply for so that I can be best placed to accelerate my learning and gain a promotion. Promotion appears to be based on merit and demonstrating your capabilities.
Experienced, Sydney - 04 Nov 2022
I see many opportunities for career progression. My current leadership supports me applying for these opportunities.
