The ATO has a fantastic standard for diversity and inclusion. Lots of workplace adjustments available for people with disabilities (including those with an invisible disability). Lots of groups and intranet pages dedicated for the LGBTIQA+ community for tools and resources (even for those who do not identify with the community). Leave entitlements are amazing for working mothers, lots of other benefits to new mothers too including paid lactation leave.
APS 6, Brisbane - 04 Jul 2024
I was particularly happy about the fact that the new EA sets out policies for parental leave using very positive language (primary and secondary caregiver as opposed to mother/father). I have seen team members make use of the additional leave entitlements, as well as other policies (WFH, compressed hours, etc) to balance work and life. I see diversity reflected in the senior levels across the area and am encouraged by this to know we can do even better.
Junior staff (APS4), Sydney - 03 Jul 2024
Good representation of the community. We have people working in teams from diverse age groups, cultures and ethnic backgrounds.
Graduate, Sydney - 03 Jul 2024
Multiple provisions are available for flexible working for child care and maternity leave. The company openly supports LGBTQIA+ issues and is working to expand the number of Indigenous people in the organisation.
Graduate, Townsville - 08 Nov 2022
I feel the ATO really attempts to be diverse and promote a culture of diversity to ensure everyone feels as though they belong and can bring their whole selves to work.
Graduate, Sydney - 07 Nov 2022
In my experience, I have observed that there are 'Women in ...' forums; celebrations on International Women's Day; there are Indigenous Affirmative Measure job recruitment drives; an Indigenous Entry Level Program (Evergreen Program); Disability Affirmative Measure job recruitment drives; reasonable adjustment processes to allow for those with disabilities to perform their job; Societies that celebrate and support minority groups such as the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Network, ATO National Disability Network, ATOMIC (ATO Making Inclusion Count - an LGBTQ+ support network), Neurodiversity Network, Generational Inclusion Network, and Moondani (First Nations Network). From what I have observed, recruitment and promotion is based on merit and there is no discrimination based on belonging to a minority group. Maternity and paternity leave options are available and I know of many of my team who have left and returned to their roles/levels upon their return from maternity leave (after a considerable amount of time) with support to ease them back into the team/organisation (i.e. part-time if they prefer this).

The ATO has a number of entry level programs. They are a great way to attract people from less privileged backgrounds, or even just those with less work experience. The Evergreen Program is also a fantastic way to attract emerging talent from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
