Training & Personal Development at Policy Futures Graduate Program (Queensland Government)

There are a lot of opportunities for development available in the graduate program, as well as some training offered as part of the placements.

Very satisfied. The graduate programs allow for a variety of integrated development activities woven through the rotation that are well chosen and build upon required skills.

The training is suitable and extensive, I have learnt about the processes of a state government and the public service that supports it

The first week is entirely learning and development aimed at people who are entering the professional workforce for the first time. During the two years in the program, there are training days at regular intervals which are extremely relevant to both the graduate program and anyone seeking to have a long-term career in policy or the public service.

I do a lot of formal training with the graduate program. I look forward to these days when they are on a topic I am unfamiliar with. Sometimes the training can be quite dry if it is on a topic I am familiar with. But it is always a good opportunity to network with the other graduates.

The formal training is very thorough and because it is provided by a few different external companies, there is an element of cross-over in some areas

There is a comprehensive training program as part of this program and it is invaluable in helping prepare you for the public service and create relationships across the grad program as well.

The graduate program has great learning opportunities for all different areas.

The training for the graduate program has been really great, the training days are one of my favourite things about the program. I have picked up a variety of skills, including more knowledge about policy/politics in general, statutory interpretation, communication, analytical and research skills. I do not have much training in my department itself but I have done independent learning modules when I am low on work which is helpful (can learn things like technical knowledge, general business/communication skills)

The online training modules are easily understood, and the team is very supportive in leading me towards any training that would relate to me and my learning in the policy area

They offered me various training opportunities and also the co-workers were always helpful and knowledgeable when I had questions.

Policy Futures Learning and Development days are the best part of the program as excellent introduction to government. Skill picked up - Personal development skill (mainly reminders of what already know should be doing) Proactive Release Redactions Training. Networking at Conferences. Statutory Interpretation ANZSOG Policy Skills. Policy Writing Skills. Communication Fundamentals - Influencing and Persuading How Parliament Works. High Performing Teams. Time Management Skills and Tips.

The training and development is the best I've had at any company. The Policy Futures team work really hard to get graduates relevant and quality training. Some sessions you might find are less useful than others, but overall, I am very happy with the training I've received.

The quality and volume of formal training is fantastic. The program starts with a full week of training, and totals upwards of 30 days L&D in the first year. Training is delivered by reputable sources with real-world experience and has been relevant and useful. Training days are a great way to catch up with your cohort and check in with the Policy Futures team - and they're catered, bonus! The training early in the program is designed to ensure that everyone in the cohort starts with a sound knowledge base in both the operation of government, policy skills and workplace preparedness. Topics covered in induction and the first phase of the program include how government works, writing for government, performing in teams, influencing and persuading, policy writing, and statutory interpretation. In later phases, the training deepens to cover cabinet and the decision-making process, presenting, ethics, Human Rights, human-centred design, systems thinking and behavioural insights, bias, and cultural capability. The last phase of training involves resume writing, career planning and interview preparedness to assist with the transition out of the program to other roles.

The program provides extensive formal training programs. This include a Mental Health First Aid Training course which has been applicable to my professional and personal life.

There are multiple formal trainings throughout the years and every now and then, we also get smaller informal trainings. Each employee has performance development assessment done in every six months and it is a great opportunity to request any upcoming trainings you may be interested in which aids your day-to-day work performance. There are multiple social clubs to enhance you skills if you wish to. For example, toastmaster club for improving public speaking skills and confidence.

The skills-based training on the parliamentary process, legislative interpretation and policy process has been invaluable.
