The program starts off with a formal education program that covers options theory before working on the desks on research projects and later getting assigned a coverage area. The informal education comes in the form of mentoring from your team members - observing and learning from the way they think, make decisions, and operate has been extremely beneficial for me.
Graduate, Sydney - 31 Aug 2024
Coming in with an engineering/CS degree, I was taught finance and how to trade pretty much from scratch on the job - one of my first lessons was "what is a stock". The formal education program is about 1-1.5 years long and includes sending you to the main office in Philadelphia, which gives you heaps of exposure to trading and lots of different traders to talk to who have seen so many things in the markets over the years.

As part of the graduate program, all graduates will attend a series of workshops run by UTS. These workshops are very well run and lead. It is also an opportunity to meet graduates in other streams.

Training is a very big priority and done very well.
Full Time, Sydney - 08 Aug 2024
SIG provides really comprehensive training to their graduate traders. Starting in Sydney with the basics of stock markets, options and game theory (especially useful as I didn't have a finance background). After this you'll go to the US to continue your development through real trading, classes and trading scenarios taught by leading experts in the field.

All grads start off with some formal options training which is well structured and gives a great foundation for working with an options team. From there, the majority of the Buyside research training is delivered on desk, where you work with more senior analysts through day to day tasks and in real trading situations. Main skills I've picked up include: coverage of specific products and sectors, financial analysis as it pertains to a trading environment and a lot about the principles of thinking probabilistically.

Many formal trainings that are trading based simulations, or scheduled 2-on-1 shadowing sessions with senior traders. Learnt how to apply theory to practice.

Training is ongoing.

Best training program any grad can receive ever. The effort and resources which go into you are unrivaled.

Options theory classes, mock trading and gaming theory / decision making classes.

On the job training, the assigned mentor always guided me through the project. If I come across something really hard to debug by myself, he is always there to help.
Graduate to Junior, Sydney - 26 Jul 2024
The first two weeks have lots of formal training sessions going over the general working of a trading firm (including understanding the basics of markets, how the complex trading systems interact and what different departments of the company do). Further, each team has its own onboarding training specific to their systems. My teams were extremely thorough and every person in my team shared their main applications/systems with me.

In the first few weeks of joining, I attended many grad-specific talks from all areas of the business which gave me a wholistic view of the entire operation. This helped give me context when developing features and applications for the business. There was very little technical training, although I was given a project to ease me into the tech stack. You very much learn by doing.

There was formal training in the first month or so with various sessions teaching us about all different parts of the business. Then there was informal training with my team as I learnt more about our systems.
Graduate, Sydney - 25 Jul 2024
Less formal training. Very hands on tasks and require learning on the job. Informal training is not too bad considering the capabilities of your colleagues.
Graduate, Sydney - 09 Sep 2023
Very rigorous and comprehensive.
Graduate, Sydney - 06 Sep 2023
Informal training is good. But the formal training is not that well structured.
