Training & Personal Development at Xero Australia

8.3
8.3 rating for Training, based on 20 reviews
Please describe the training programmes at your company and tell us what skills you've picked up.
We are both trained from a technical and non-technical aspects. The technical side of things usually come from the team we got placed in/expressed interests in. The work we got and the experience we gain as we work with the team definitely offers us with much progress on the technical knowledge we have both on the tech stacks in general and the internal tools the company uses. The non-technical side of things come from our managers, who offer a huge amount of guidance and help on our soft skills from how to facilitate good relationship with colleagues to how to best take care of our own mental health when we face burnouts.

There have been some good training opportunities which are great, they're just not super organised in conveying information about the training.

A lot of training given for the grad program. We had many workshops during our induction and also training for a AWS course

Formal training: 3 days before joining our first rotation, we had soft skill training. 3 day training with ThoughtWorks - technical essentials (4 weeks into rotation) AWS Training for Developing on AWS (3 days) Non-Formal Training: Buddy System which can be a bit hit or miss depending on who you are paired with. Pair programming with engineers of varying level of seniority. Picked up a range of different engineering skills (TDD, Redux, Sagas, better understanding of .NET APIs. React, etc.)

The entire Grad program is done incredibly well, in terms of both technical skills and acclimating to Xero work environment. There is a really strong formal program set for Grads, while still giving us a lot of time with our actual teams, while Onboarding setup for these teams have been very good for me so far.

AWS Cloud training

I attended a conference, as part of my personal development budget. But other than that I have not received any formalised training as part of the grad program. I really would appreciate and benefit from some formal training I think. In terms of informal training, I have learnt how to write an interview script and run customer interviews. I have also learnt how to analyse qualitative data. I have also learnt about company metrics/business jargon.

I have really enjoyed learning on the job and credit my buddies and other engineers who have taken the time to help me develop my skills.

AWS solutions architecture. They are also a great place for new engineers to find where they belong on the stack

AWS study -- the content was boring (it's rote memorisation of a catalogue of products) and the website through which I initially learned it was unlicensed by the company without much forewarning or discussion with the employees using it Litmos training -- fairly well made, not just stock videos and music. On the job training. If you establish your goals early and communicate them to the team, you'll get plenty of opportunities to learn interesting things
