Culture at Northrop Consulting Engineers

8.9
8.9 rating for Culture, based on 56 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
My section's culture is very diverse and has a lot of different personalities which make work fun and allow time for banter to break up the day. After hours are typically in work events and are light hearted and a great chance to get to know other team members. There is a strong sense of teamwork, however when time pressure is on there can be a breakdown as everyone has plenty on their plate. In a big company like mine, there's lots of different personalities so plenty of people to socialise with who may or may not share common goals. However everyone is always civil.

In office is quiet, trying to mend it by getting people into the office and not WFH so much. Fun when everyone is together but they're not really together. Not much happens after hours and work doesn't provide after hour events which i think would be beneficial

The company's culture is very relaxed and welcoming, both in the office and after hours. The company is very respectful home time and there isn't an expectation to work outside normal hours. I am part of a team with 3 other member and a team leader. the team leader is responsible for making sure we all have work and that I am getting adequate training and exposure to different projects. I also have a mentor who I meet with every few months to see how I am progressing. I also work with them and they are in my team so we catch up informally more often. my manager has a boss who looks after the whole remedial team. their responsibilities are similar to the manager, just for the whole team. They are still involved with day to day projects, and I sometimes get to work with them which I enjoy. there is good cooperation amongst the team and we always have lunch together. A lot of the team meats up outside of work for social catchup and in general we all get along.

In office, the company culture is professional, friendly, caring, and that we all have the same work driven mentality. During after hours, we are more friendly in the social space and get along well. I feel that everyone at Northrop treats everyone with respect regardless of the position which makes it comfortable to work in.

We have smaller teams of about 10 people, including engineers, designers and draftspeople. This is primarily where we get the support and guidance we need, and people are usually very close within these teams. Multiple teams make up each discipline. In Civil, we have many events (including bonding events or cross-team lunches) so we have the chance to interact with other people outside of our teams. I really appreciate this as it helps the office feel more as a single unit rather than very separated individual teams. We also have a couple of events each year that brings the whole office (Civil, Structural, Buidling Services and Business Support) together. While there is a hierarchy in the Newcastle office, it does not feel very apparent. The managers are very kind and supportive and happy to chat about whatever. They just feel like a part of the team. There is very little interaction with other offices within Northrop, except for events that are held every few years. Communication from some of the people at the top of the company can feel very detached and corporate, but there is very little interaction from them so this largely goes unnoticed.

The company maintains a relatively flat hierarchy to encourage open communication and collaboration.

Though we have a team structure, the managers are friendly, and it is a relaxed environment. The team do their best to support one another and are courteous. There are many activities that go on after hours which are optional to join in on, such as bouldering.

There is a clear structure and hierarchy with the structural team. which is split into two sections, within these sections are teams, each with their own manager. The environment remains pretty open, and senior staff are approachable and supportive. Teamwork is highly valued, with a strong emphasis on cooperation and knowledge sharing between departments. After hours, there is a friendly atmosphere, with colleagues often organising social events such as friday darts or cocktail night

Good culture. Everyone values teamwork and wants to help out where they can.

In the office: In the office, mostly everyone is doing their own thing. But when helps are needed, everyone is willing to help. Graduates and undergraduates have mentors that provide them with guidance. Everyone is given responsibility with their own time and manage their own resourcing.   After hours: Most of the time, people head to home directly after work. But, there are some time when we all gather for pub. There are many fun events that occur after work such as bouldering, football, badminton, etc.

The team are generally friendly and welcoming. Although compared to other offices, I feel like we are more segregated and less engaged with the social aspect at work. People usually attend social events for the free benefits and not for the people. Different teams (i.e. between Civil, Structural, Sustainability etc) don't really interact with each other. There isn't really any hierarchy, people treat each other with the same respects.

I think Northrops culture is second to none and this to me is a direct result of hiring people. It is also hard to say because this is my first professional employer.

Socialising amongst colleagues at all parts of the hierarchy are highly encouraged. Talking to your manager, your manager's manager, and higher is easy and they are all very approachable. Moreover, they actually take into consideration what you say. This fosters a lot of great teamwork and effective efficient communication, as you aren't scared to ask questions or make decisions.

The culture at Northrop is excellent. They run events throughout the years to encourage people to network and get to know colleagues that they have not met/talked to. As a graduate, you are not forced or encouraged to stay after hours. In the Specialist Service team, we run Team-Bonding events throughout the year which can be fun. I feel like I can be friends with my superior and other senior engineers, without feeling threatened or scared.

The people at the company as a whole are quite young. Section managers oversee group managers who oversee regular engineers. A lot of coordination between different engineering disciplines happens in the company, as is required by the nature of the work designing buildings. People work well together here. Outside of work hours, people do socialise. There is a strong group of people going bouldering consistently, lunches together, coffee runs.

The company culture is very good, like we would have the New of the Week in each week and every discipline would share the goals and learns during that week. And after hours they would have a happy hour on each Friday to relax and this bonds the relationship between colleagues.

Everyone is very welcomed. All employees are highly respected in office and out of office. Northrop Consulting Engineers has a very good culture of socialisation and everyone is encouraged to support each other and there is a good cooperation among all employees. A weekly workload meeting held to meet sure everyone is on track and distribute workload among teammates. Social and team bonding events are organised on regular basis. End of the week distress hours is for employees to have drinks and catch up with other colleagues in the office in an informal setting. There are many, the above are just a few to name.

It's actually amazing. The company is employee-owned meaning that some managers and executives are principles who own private shares in the company. All profits are returned to them, which can then be passed on to staff. The culture is tight, the managing partners (CEOs) work in the same office and everyone is approachable.
Intern, Sydney - 20 Jul 2022
The culture here is very good. Teamwork and cooperation is always encouraged here. There is always social/learning events and lunchtime talks run which breaks up the day. Socialising after hours is also encouraged.
