8.3
8.3 rating for Training, based on 49 reviews
Please describe the training programmes at your company and tell us what skills you've picked up.
Some formal training from lunch time talks and online modelling sessions, however, informal training by asking questions from senior consultants and doing the work myself has been the greatest source to pick up knowledge and modelling skills.

informal training through managers and others is good as they're often always there to help. Not much formal training has occurred (have asked for specific software training and unsure whether this will happen), its mainly learning on the job.

There are good opportunities to train and learns skills, both on the job and in more formal settings. the company is good at providing training for skills that you want to improve in.

Very satisfied with both formal and informal training. It allows me to quickly learn and adapt to the teamwork environment with ease. It makes asking questions much comfortable without being afraid. I believe this is very important for new people joining. I have learnt how to communicate with relevant stakeholders accordingly in a professional manner. I also learnt lots of project management and how to offer resolve and offer solutions from an engineering perspective.

There is a lot of in-office training (i.e. learning from other engineers). I have also undertaken external training for use of civil programs. There are usually lunch and learns once or twice a month where an expert (usually in the office) will go in depth on a topic, such as road or stormwater design. We also are given access to webinars run by external companies for upskilling in multiple different areas.

There is a graduate day that occurs at the beginning of each year, but I feel that training might vary team to team. I don't think there is as much formal training processes as some other companies.

The company provides structured training sessions, including graduate development days which cover specific aspects of structural engineering and design. There are also regular 'Lunch time talks' and seminars on industry developments. In addition to formal programs, I've gained valuable experience from working closely with senior engineers, who offer guidance and mentorship.

Training program is good no complaints.

I have a graduate training regularly that provides me with basic knowledge and guidance. They are presented by experienced engineers. I also have LTT session which helps me to gain more insight on others project and lesson learned. Other training includes seminars and workshops that happen outside work. All graduates are automatically included in the mentoring program where they are assigned with a mentor that guide them when they face challenges at projects. The skills that I have learned from the programs mentioned above are mostly about designs (Concrete, timber, steel, masonry structures). The other skills that I picked up are programming skills and soft skills such as how to present and communicate designs with clients and contractors.

Informal training, learning on the job is what i find most effective. We get formal trainings during graduate training sessions which occurs about once a month. I find this to be less useful. They are online, which makes it hard for interactions and asking questions. The good part is they are recorded, and you can go back to it at your own time. I would recommend introducing a different format for formal training.

There are not so many development programs at Northrop
Graduate, Sydney - 07 Aug 2024
There is not really a formal training for the job. Most of the training is on the job/informal. However, there is a development program called "Northrop University", where you can select a mentor of your choice and perform periodically meetups/catchups to review your progress to reach your target. The program also encourages you to be chartered, which also guides you into how you can achieve that goal.

Teammates will explain thoroughly design process for each job, managers focus on starting you on smaller jobs and working your way up so you can take ownership. Good opportunities to learn new skills in a variety of sized jobs in structural engineering.
Graduate, Newcastle - 02 Aug 2024
There are a few graduate events specifically for graduate development. Otherwise, it is mostly on the job training. Learning building design principles, interpreting standards, coordination and inter-disciplinary work.
Graduate, Sydney - 01 Aug 2024
We got the training at the first day we arrived including watching some introduction videos and safety inductions. Then my company have organised the asbestos awareness course for me in the coming weeks.

I haven't experienced much 'formal' training. So far the informal/on the job training has been good, concepts are explained well enough for me to understand the first time usually and my questions are always answered.
